The MAGA Split
Yes, let's all watch
Given the lunacy, cruelty, and stupidity oozing from D.C., it’s taken awhile for ‘principled conservatives’ to emerge. But there are Punxsutawney Phil’s out there, at last.
For more than a year, the question of whether the entire Republican Party had devolved into a full-fledged cult remained a subject of debate among the general public, pundits notwithstanding.
Was it a populist wave driven by actual policy? Anything resembling an honest debate? Ways to make lives better?
Or was it more a snarling, moody, and disorderly gathering of clowns bent only on tearing things down? A personality cult around ‘him’, a bloated shell of a man. A portrait of the worst in us. Any of us. Greedy and selfish beyond any measure. Something foul.
Turns out it’s the latter, and at last, more are deciding to put party over person. The carnival isn’t over, not by a long-shot, but the tent is getting smaller. The racist underpinnings are beginning to crumble.
It’s not enough that America has quickly become an international pariah. There’s now another, more internecine battle raging as White Supremacists want center stage. MAGA isn’t nearly extreme enough for them. They want Heil! not just Hail.
Supporters now are those who are full-on about preferring more rule-breaking and the denigration of others, while the Republicans who are finally standing up to this fascist regime face shaming on state TV and political banishment.
And their numbers are growing. Thank God.
Imagine, a conservative movement that honors the Constitution.
Fact is, they were always there.
Many were biding their time to see just how bad things could get. Cutting off food to people in need wasn’t enough for some. Neither was gutting programs that exist to provide safety, or educational opportunities, or support for nations invaded by the worst war mongers the world has seen since Hitler or Mussolini.
For most Republicans in Congress, they will continue to squat, stoop, and cower and give in to the seduction and perks of living inside the Beltway. Some will flinch, some will show a white feather, some may even hold town halls at home, but most know their time is limited.
The highest hurdle now is the Supreme Court. The only thing supreme about six of the nine is the ease and comfort they are with hypocrisy.
Now that is a problem.
But as we enter a new year, hope springs.
Hope springs because it must.
